KENYA: MUSIC MESSAGES FOR PEACE
To musicians and producers worldwide:
We at Listen for Life,
a global non-profit music organization, are launching an exciting
project addressed at the current situation in Kenya. We are calling all
musicians and producers
worldwide to join Listen for Life's
mission to use music as a channel for communication, and in this case,
to make an immediate impact not only in the preservation of music and
culture but of actual human life.
Kenya has been undergoing catastrophic civil unrest in the wake of
recent elections. Tribal violence is taking the lives of many men,
women, and children, and is threatening the stability of the
traditionally peaceful East African nation. As of Mid-February, 2008,
some positive progress has been made regarding the stability of the
nation, both peacefully and economically; however, the effects of
recent violence and displacement will continue and the situation
remains urgent.
Our goal is to create and broadcast video montages consisting of ‘music
messages for peace’ submitted by musicians of all styles, cultures,
creeds, and nations, with the hope that these messages will inspire the
people of Kenya to realize that the world is watching and cares what
happens to them. Additionally, we may use this and similar Listen for Life projects to generate donations to help coordinate concerts and build new music production studios in Kenya as part of Listen for Life's mission to use music as a catalyst for peace.
1-minute ‘Music Message for Peace’
Listen for Life is calling
for videos 1 minute or less, featuring musicians from around the globe
sending their music messages for peace. The only requirement is that
the musicians send positive, peaceful messages in response to the
violence in Kenya. Otherwise, the creativity and effectiveness of the
video is up to the artists and video producers.
Submissions may:
-include lyrics, instrumentals, or both; please use English or Swahili languages if possible
-offer specific or general messages or suggestions
-feature musicians directly addressing the camera, or rather show artistic visuals with the music message in the background
-be in edited or non-edited form
As we receive these 1-minute video submissions, Listen for Life will edit them together into inspiring montages. Despite Kenya’s recently damaged infrastructure, we will using Listen for Life's
contacts in Kenya to broadcast these montages however possible, and
we’re currently in the process of organizing a concert in Kenya for
broadcast as well.
Additionally, internet and international television networks will also be
broadcasting the project.
Note to San Francisco Bay Area musicians: we are happy to provide
videotaping services for your musical messages- contact us by phone/email.
